  • What the sign says:
une tour eiffel de bambou au fours de la nuit 2013
Project Background: I thought a bing translation would add some je ne sais quoi to the piece. It means "an eiffel tower of bamboo during night." I've always had great admiration for Monsieur Eiffel's tower. I can draw it somewhat accurately from memory . . . I have a tattoo of it. The Eiffel tower was built to show the superiority of French engineering. It is all about structural elements. My sculptural work always reveals how it is built. Translating the tower to bamboo is difficult. I had never worked with it before. You can't use mechanical means to join it, a nail or screw will just split it. It has to be lashed.
Sculpture, as opposed to drawing or painting is about fighting gravity. Eiffel did it. Now (with extreme debt to Eiffel) I've done it, with bamboo versus iron. I hope you enjoy it.
